Aesculap Academia celebrates 20-year academic milestone

Aesculap Academia is celebrating two decades of delivering world- class expert medical and surgical education on the very latest medical and surgical topics and thinking.

A special anniversary event was held at the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons of England in London to celebrate 20 years of education and training for healthcare professionals.

Aesculap Academia today enjoys a world-wide reputation for providing continuing education for health-care professionals, including surgeons, physicians, nurses and anaesthetists, with premium quality courses accredited by medical societies, international medical associations and the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Standards Office.

Brian Chapman, General Manager Aesculap Academia, said: “We started out small in the 1990’s with a course created in response to requests from a number of developing surgeons who were looking for assistance in expert medical educational training. Just ten delegates attended back then - little did we know how this would grow over the coming years.”

Following the success of early pilot events, the company decided to formalise this area of the UK business and in 1996 it officially became known as Aesculap Academia, delivering medical and surgical education in conjunction with key surgeons, particularly in the area of orthopaedics.

During the 1990’s Aesculap Academia delivered a range of spinal hip and trauma courses which reflected the very latest thinking which attracted national and international faculty and delegates.

By the early 2000’s Aesculap Academia had established strong relationships with the Global Academy network and the Royal College of Surgeons of England, enabling it to continue to develop its materials and content through its work with a wide range of leading experts. As a result, the course portfolio has expanded to include Orthopaedics, Neurosurgery, ENT, Vascular Surgery, Anaesthesia, Clinical Nutrition and Patient Safety over the last two decades.

One of the most popular courses in the beginning was the Life and Times of a Surgical Instrument, which provided both theatre and Sterile Services staff with valuable insights into the production and care and maintenance of the instrumentation all clinicians rely on.

More recently the development of the pioneering event – Cardio-Pulmonary Transplantation course -  was developed to enable Surgeons from across the globe to take part in a revolutionary training course that allowed them to train in organ transplantation. This course was the first of its kind in the UK, taking place at the Newcastle Surgical Training Centre and saw Cardiothoracic Surgeons, cardiac theatre sisters and SPRs undergo two days of intensive training under the guidance of experienced surgeons.

2016 will conclude with over 3000 delegates attending Academia events including the latest portfolio additions the DCB Cardiology course and the internationally renowned Thyroid Eye Disease Symposium.

Brian added: “Twenty years is a milestone. It is an occasion to celebrate, an opportunity to look back, but also a great opportunity to chart the path forward.

“The journey of Aesculap Academia in many ways reflects that of the changing topography of healthcare. Our offer has matured and been modified in line with the transforming needs and innovation of medical and surgical care over the last two decades – and we now look forward to the next 20 years.”
