First UK hip-replacement patients benefit from new B. Braun CoreHip implant

The first UK patients are benefiting from a next generation hip replacement system developed by B. Braun and a modified operating technique which is helping to deliver rapid recovery and low infection rates.

B. Braun developed the new CoreHip stem system in Germany, and leading orthopaedic surgeon Dr Kristian Kley uses the prosthesis with a modified antero-lateral approach which means he can complete hip replacement surgery and have patients out of hospital within 24 hours.

With such a short operating time and minimally invasive technique, Dr Kley has recorded zero infection and dislocation rates and patients are recording much lower post-operative pain and quicker recovery.

Dr Kley has brought the technique and the CoreHip prosthesis to Orthopaedic Specialists (OS)  in London ahead of a planned launch of the implant by B.Braun Medical Ltd in the Autumn.

He said: ‘Because the implant can be used through a completely muscle-sparing approach, the patient has full muscle function immediately after surgery. This allows much earlier mobilisation and can lead to a significantly faster recovery.’

One of the patients who has received a new hip from Dr Kley is fellow orthopaedic surgeon and OS Clinic colleague Professor Adrian Wilson.

Professor Wilson, a leading knee specialist, said: “It was very different being the patient but I have to say I was genuinely impressed with the results of a great implant and less invasive approach.”

“Being a Surgeon, it was really important for me to be back on my feet quickly. I went from not being able to walk 100 yards down the road to be being back at work, fully operating, in 4 weeks.”

Phil Cleary, Product Manager for Joint Technology, at B. Braun Medical Ltd in the UK said: “The CoreHip implant ensures that surgeons can treat every patient from one tray of instruments offering greater efficiency and flexibility.”

“Internationally acclaimed surgeons such as Dr Kley have found that the CoreHip in combination with the antero-lateral approach means hip replacements can be done as day cases with patients recovering much faster.”

“We are delighted to see that some patients are already benefiting, and we aim to be rolling the CoreHip system out nationally later in the year.”
