B. Braun reveals ‘Elephant Inside Out’ design for Herd of Sheffield

An artist who draws on live animals will be designing its elephant sculpture in the upcoming Herd of Sheffield parade.

B. Braun Medical Ltd has chosen Gillian Higgins to design its sponsored elephant, ‘Elephant Inside Out’, as part of the exhibition being developed by the Children's Hospital Charity and Wild in Art.

Gillian Higgins is the director of ‘Horses Inside Out’, an organisation which shows how understanding anatomy, physiology and biomechanics can improve wellbeing, performance and reduce the risk of injury.
Gillian's unique trademark is painting the anatomical systems on the sides of live horses and then to using them as a living canvas to get her message across.
Initially trained as a remedial sports and massage therapist, Gillian is also a McTimoney animal practitioner, author, anatomical artist, British Horse Society Senior Coach and a competitive rider.
Gillian, who is regularly invited to give talks and demonstrations all over the world, said: “The B. Braun elephant design, ‘Elephant Inside Out’, will depict the intricate, interdependent and wonder of the anatomical systems on which life depends. It is therefore very relevant to the Children's Hospital.
“The design has been inspired by my love of anatomy and my desire to show how gaining an appreciation of how a body works can improve wellbeing, reduce potential injury, allow people to make informed decisions about how they use their bodies and help them make sense of what is happening when things go wrong.
“I have also been inspired by studying how elephants move in the wild and using the footage captured in Africa in my lecture demonstrations.”
Hans Hux, Chief Executive & Chairman of B. Braun Medical Ltd, said: “We chose Gillian because her work provides a fascinating insight into health, wellbeing and physical locomotion from an anatomical perspective.
“Her designs are captivating and informative. They show how understanding the musculoskeletal system and appreciating how it functions can help keep it in optimum condition.

“Understanding and caring for the body is the very core of our business and lies at the heart of the Children’s Hospital too so partnering with Gillian is an ideal fit.
“The work the Children’s Hospital does is inspiring and Gillian’s design will be a wonderful testament to that.”
B. Braun’s elephant is among more than 50 sculptures placed around the city’s streets, parks and open areas and will go on to be auctioned in aid of the Children's Hospital Charity later this year.
