Insulin injection - needle handling

How do I use a pen needle?

Injecting will become (or already is) a routine, you no longer have to think about. However, during the first few weeks, it is helpful to have some guidance with the needle handling. If you have already been injecting for a long time, and feel like you want to check your technique in general – be our guest. Below, you find every little step explained in a picture with a description.

Step by step

Needle handling - insert the cartridge into your pen

Insert the cartridge into your pen. This does not apply if you inject yourself with a ready-to-use pen.

Always take a new pen needle.

Needle handling - pick an area to inject into

Pick an area to inject into. The site and the skin should be in good condition. Consider rotation. Preferred areas to inject into are outer thighs, abdomen or buttocks.

Needle handling - as adult, you should pinch up if you use needles longer than 6 millimeters

As adult, you should pinch up if you use needles longer than 6 millimeters.

Needle handling - apply the injection technique which is recommended for your needle and inject

Apply the injection technique which is recommended for your needle and inject: Push the thumb button firmly until it is fully depressed. After the dose has been injected, hold the needle in for a good 10 seconds to receive the full dose and to prevent the insulin from leaking.

Needle handling - medical sharps collector

One method to dispose of the needle is to use a medical sharps box. Your diabetes nurse should be able to recommend how you can get hold of a sharps box and the local guidance for disposing of them.

If you have any questions concerning pen needles, handling them and injecting in general, you can either get in touch with your diabetes nurse or consult the instructions for use of your pen device.
