The World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies and the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Tübingen are pleased to announce this special fellowship program which is exclusively funded by an annual grant from Aesculap.

Each year 2 young neurosurgeons especially from developing countries, will have the chance to be trained in the field of pediatric neurosurgical techniques at the Department of Neurosurgery in Tübingen.

Program Information

The Department of Neurosurgery of the University of Tübingen is a large lnstitution which runs a daily surgical program of 10-12 surgeries, or about 3,000 surgeries per year. The Section of Pediatric Neurosurgery runs a busy surgical program and various, often interdisciplinary, outpatient clinics. Children are treated in close cooperation with the large University Children's Hospital and its numerous specialties, foremost Pediatric Neurology, Pediatric Oncology, Neonatology, Pediatric Surgery, Craniofacial Surgery and Pediatric lntensive Care Medicine.

The Fellowship consists of extensive exposure to the whole spectrum and techniques of pediatric neurosurgery including hydrocephalus, CNS tumors, craniofacial surgery, spinal and cranial malformations, spasticity, epilepsy surgery, and peripheral nerve surgery.

Program details are

  • Duration of fellowship will be 6 months, starting April 1st and October 1st.
  • Fellows will be provided with furnished accommodation in a modern small apartment close to Hospital Campus.
  • Fellows will be paid a scholarship of € 1,250.00 per month minus costs for the apartment.
  • The fellowship does not provide travel expenses.
  • Candidates will be included in all activities of pediatric neurosurgery including surgeries, conferences, clinics, ward rounds, workshops and have access to all other educational activities of the Department of Neurosurgery.
  • Candidates are expected to actively participate in ongoing clinical research and work on an own research project during their stay.

Dr. Imane Bersali, 21st WFNS-Aesculap Pediatric Fellow

July - September 2021, Imane Bersali, MD, Algeria

From July until September 2021, Dr. Imane Bersali from Algeria participates in the WFNS-Aesculap Pediatric Fellowship program at the University Hospital in Tübingen as our 21st Fellow.
Originally, Dr. Bersali’s fellowship was scheduled in Q2 2021, which had to be postponed to Q3 due to pandemic restrictions.
Therefore, we are more than happy that it worked for Q3 and that she can gain new experiences in pediatric neurosurgery.
We wish her all the best and hope she enjoys her time in Tübingen!

April - June 2021

Due to the COVID 19 outbreak and the associated travel restrictions, the WFNS-Aesculap Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellowship could not be filled from April to June 2021.

Dr. Katalin Nóra Lőrincz, 20th WFNS-Aesculap Pediatric Fellow

October - March 2021, Katalin Nóra Lőrincz, MD, Hungary

Dr. Katalin Nóra Lőrincz participates in the neurosurgical training at the University Hospital in Tübingen as our 20th WFNS-Aesculap Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellow from October till March 2021.
It is unfortunate that we are unable to personally welcome her at our Aesculap headquarters in Tuttlingen due to the pandemic restrictions, but our entire Neuro team wishes her all the best for her future.

Dr. Sory Ibrahim Fofana, 19th WFNS-Aesculap Pediatric Fellow

July - September 2020, Sory Ibrahim Fofana, MD, Romania

From July to September 2020 Dr. Sory Ibrahim Fofana from Romania joined the neurosurgical training at the University Hospital in Tübingen as our 19th WFNS-Aesculap Pediatric Fellow.
Due to the pandemic restrictions, it was regrettable that we were unable to welcome him personally at our Aesculap headquarter in Tuttlingen.
The entire Neuro team wishes him all the best for his future.

Dr. Janvier Hitimana, 18th WFNS-Aesculap Pediatric Fellow & Harald Dreher, Business Manager Neurosurgery

After Dr. Janvier Hitimana’s participation in the WFNS-Aesculap Adult Neurosurgery Fellowship from January to March 2020, he additionally participated in the Pediatric Fellowship from April to June 2020.
We were pleased to welcome him in Tuttlingen in February during his fellowship for Adult Neurosurgery (and before the restrictions of the COVID 19 pandemic came).
We wish him all the best for his future and hope that he could gain a lot of experiences during his fellowships.

On February 7th, 2020 we got the chance to personally welcome him at our Aesculap headquarter in Tuttlingen.
His visit included a mixture of product sessions and factory tours.

On September 14th, 2018 we welcomed Dr. Thabo L. Rowland in our Aesculap headquarter in Tuttlingen. He is our 11th WFNS-Aesculap Pediatric Fellow and was from July until September 2018 in the university hospital in Tübingen for neurosurgical training.

Application Process

The ideal candidate is an English or German speaking female or male young postgraduate neurosurgeon from a residency training program or an equivalent program from developing countries who during her or his residency demonstrated good skills in microsurgery. The fellow wishes to subspecialize or to actively concentrate on pediatric neurosurgery in the future. The fellow should have a work experience of no longer than 5 years after concluding her/his residency.
