Omnitest® Announcement

B. Braun Medical Ltd. has taken the decision to discontinue the Omnitest® 3 and Omnitest® 5 blood glucose meter from the UK market. This decision was taken as methods of diabetes treatment are rapidly evolving. We have observed a clear trend away from intermittent (BGM) blood glucose monitoring, such as B. Braun Omnitest®, towards continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) which allows more adherence to therapy and a better quality of life for patients.
The discontinuation will be implemented gradually with completion envisaged for the end of 2021:

  • 30th September 2020: no new Omnitest® 3 or Omnitest® 5 meters will be available. Patients requiring new or replacement meters will be advised to seek an alternative provider.
  • 31st December 2021: Omnitest® 3 and Omnitest® 5 test strips will be removed from Drug Tariff and will no longer be available on prescription or to purchase.

As part of this process the Omnican® Lance Soft lancets will also be removed from the Drug Tariff from the 31st December 2021.

Please note: Due to the added benefits the FORA Advance Blood Glucose and Ketone meter offers, it will remain in the company’s portfolio and available to patients along with the Omnican Fine® pen needle range.

Relevant products for measuring glucose levels

B. Braun’s easy to use devices will meet your expectations concerning quality and reliability. Find out how they work below.

Relevant products for measuring glucose levels

First step: capillary blood collection with lancing device and lancet

  • Lancing device
The lancing device holds the lancet and is used to set the optimal puncture depth.
  • Lancet
The lancet punctures the skin to access the capillary vessels for blood collection.

Second step: blood glucose measurement

  • Test strip
The enzyme on the test strips reacts specifically with the blood glucose.
The current generated by the reaction is converted and displayed as a blood glucose value.
  • Meter
On the meter, you can add markings to keep in mind activities, medication or measurements with control solution.
The data is stored in the meter and can later be uploaded onto a computer.
