Baia Mare, the capital of Maramures county, is a charming small town along Săsar River, close both to the Hungarian and Ucrainian border and had its first historical written mentioning in 1328. In the XIVth - XVth centuries the town developed as a major gold-mine point. Some points of interest in the city would be: Chimney of Phoenix Copper Smelter, height: 351.5 metres, which is the tallest structure in Romania; Mineralogy Museum; Stephen's Tower (in the heart of Baia Mare's old town); Baia Mare Ethnography and Folk Art Museum.
