Continuous Improvement has various definitions but essentially it is ‘getting better all the time’. There are many terms which are used such as Kaizen, Lean, 6 Sigma, Gemba, which can be confusing; but it needn’t be.
Getting better all the time is inherent in the Quality Management System of aseptic units. Deviations lead to root cause analysis and CAPA, terms we are used to and expected to be managed through Change Control. Correctly managed and implemented they are expected to lead to Continuous Improvement. These changes are usually driven though by an unexpected quality event.
There are broader benefits to Continuous Improvement than Quality alone. Cost reduction, staff motivation, environmental improvements, capacity improvements, safety improvements, reducing down time are all areas where Continuous Improvement can be beneficial.
B. Braun Aseptic Consulting Services firmly believe that improvements can enhance the quality, efficiency and operating environment of aseptic units. Improvements implemented can release time to focus on the operation of the aseptic unit and release time to care. One of the biggest challenges is choosing which of many improvement ideas to pursue and how to prioritise them.
