The UK Government has committed to be net carbon neutral by 2050 with Scotland going one step further in committing to be net zero for all greenhouse gases by 2045. Following the launch of the Climate Assembly UK in January 2020, NHS England convened the NHS Net Zero Expert Panel to take and analyse evidence on how the health service can contribute to nationwide carbon reduction efforts. Based on the findings of the report NHS England formally adopted two targets, set as the earliest possible credible dates for the NHS to achieve net zero emissions:
- for the NHS Carbon Footprint (emissions under NHS direct control), net zero by 2040, with an ambition for an interim 80% reduction by 2028-2032, and;
- for the NHS Carbon Footprint Plus, (which includes our wider supply chain), net zero by 2045, with an ambition for an interim 80% reduction by 2036-2039
Their report showed since 1990 a significant (62%) improvements in carbon foot print of the NHS but acknowledged that significant work still needs to be done to achieve its ambitions.
As an ISO14001 certified company we are driven by reducing our impact upon the environment and believe sustainability in aseptic operations can be delivered without compromise to quality and efficiency. Cleanroom usage of energy is high with HVAC consuming up to 80% of a facilities energy by maintaining the necessary pressure differentials, air change rates, humidity and temperature controls.
There is significant opportunity though to reduce energy usage, either at the design stage of a new facility or retrofitting energy savings measures to an existing facility. Likewise careful equipment design can reduce energy usage significantly without compromising quality.
Waste generated in aseptic units is high and with waste disposal charges and land fill taxes, a considerable cost. By evaluating the waste streams produced and minimising certain ones, considerable cost savings and environmental benefits can be realised.
B. Braun Aseptic Consulting Services can advise on:
- New cleanroom design and energy savings
- Reducing energy usage in existing cleanrooms
- Recycling opportunities
- Reducing waste and disinfection use
We can recommend practical measures which if adopted could not only improve the carbon foot print of the operation but potentially provide significant cost savings and return on investment.
