Stoma accessories are products designed to be used with your stoma bag (pouch) to improve comfort, protect your skin and help reduce the risk of leaks. They can support bag fit and security, especially if you have uneven skin, sore areas or experience shorter wear time.
Common stoma accessories include barrier rings, paste, wafer extenders, adhesive remover sprays, barrier sprays, powders and belts for convex appliances.
Barrier rings (also known as seals) mould around your stoma to fill in dips, folds or uneven skin, helping to create a secure seal and reduce leaks.
Stoma paste acts as a filler to help seal small gaps and smooth creases in the skin and help reduce the risk of leakage and skin irritation.
Wafer extenders (also known as flange extenders, plasters or tape) fit around the edge of the wafer (adhesive area) on the stoma bag or baseplate of a 2-piece system to improve security and extend wear time, especially during movement.
Barrier sprays or wipes form a protective layer on the skin to help reduce irritation from adhesives or stoma output.
Stoma powders help dry moist skin before applying the stoma appliance.
Adhesive remover sprays or wipes help gently remove the adhesive part of the stoma bag or baseplate, reducing discomfort and protecting the skin.
Stoma belts are commonly used with convex bags to provide extra security by helping keep the bag in place and support its weight, reducing pulling and movement against the skin.
Stoma accessories can be used individually or together to improve comfort, protect the skin and help reduce leaks.
Yes. Many people use stoma accessories to help prevent leaks by improving the seal between the bag wafer (or 2-piece baseplate) and the skin. Barrier rings, paste and wafer extenders are commonly used when skin is uneven, the stoma changes shape, or movement affects appliance security.
Using the right combination of accessories can help improve confidence and comfort.
Yes. Some people use a combination of stoma accessories, such as a barrier ring with wafer extenders, to help achieve a better seal, protect the skin and increase bag wear time.
However, using more products isn’t always better. In some cases, reviewing the stoma bag itself may be more helpful than adding extra accessories.
A stoma care nurse can help you decide whether adjusting your bag or using a small number of accessories is the best option for your skin and body shape. You can also contact the B. Braun Emerald Telehealth Team for advice. Simply call 0800 163 007 or email bbm.emeraldtelehealth@nhs.net
Stoma accessories are generally designed using skin‑friendly materials to support comfort and help protect the skin around the stoma. Many are created to be gentle, flexible and suitable for everyday use alongside a stoma bag.
Using the right bag and the most suitable accessories together can help create a secure seal, reduce leaks and minimise adhesive wear on the skin. This can play an important role in helping protect the skin and reducing the risk of soreness developing over time.
If you have sensitive skin or are unsure which products are best for you, a stoma care nurse can help you choose options that suit your skin, body shape and lifestyle. You can also contact the B. Getting the right advice and the chance to try suitable products can help protect your skin and improve confidence in managing your stoma.
Barrier rings are often preferred where there are deeper creases, folds or uneven peristomal contours, as they provide consistent thickness and can be moulded to support a more predictable seal. Paste may be more appropriate for minor contouring or small gaps, where only limited filling is required.
Selection should consider contour depth, stoma profile, output type and patient dexterity.
Alcohol‑free stoma paste performs the same caulking and gap‑filling function as standard paste but is formulated without alcohol. This can improve comfort during application while still helping to support a secure seal between the baseplate and the skin.
Wafer extenders are intended to reinforce the edge of the baseplate, rather than correct central sealing issues. They can be helpful for patients with high activity levels, moisture exposure such as sweating, shower/bathing or swimming, or movement etc.
They should be used alongside appropriate bag selection and central sealing, not as a substitute for them.
If multiple accessories are required to maintain wear time, control leakage or prevent skin stripping, this may indicate the need to review the stoma bag itself (e.g. hydrocolloid properties, convexity, flexibility, aperture size or product type such as brand or one‑ vs two‑piece systems.
Accessories can be valuable supportive tools but should not replace appropriate bag selection.

Created to be your everyday partner, Ally® accessories are designed to help achieve a secure fit, support skin protection and optimise wear time, while allowing treatment choices to be guided by clinical assessment, patient preference and lifestyle.
