Minimally Invasive Surgery
A managed laparoscopic equipment service for minimally invasive surgery
Laparoscopic equipment typically has a short lifecycle, often less than five years, as the sensitive nature of the frequently used equipment leads to high laparoscopic repair and replacement costs.
Aesculap® Lap RENU is a managed equipment service for laparoscopic surgery, providing standardised, reusable laparoscopic instrument sets that improve theatre efficiency, reduce costs, and support sustainable surgery.1,2,3
From single-use to sustainable surgery: By replacing single-use with reusable instruments, an NHS hospital saved £218k and avoided over 6,000 disposables in one year with B. Braun’s Managed Equipment Service.

We collaborate with the hospital and its surgeons to design tailored laparoscopic procedure sets, including instrumentation, endoscopes, trocars and power systems. Standardised trays and a comprehensive maintenance programme keep sets complete, functional and consistently available - reducing variability, downtime and workflow disruption.
Through using our in-house Technical Services team in Sheffield, maintenance is consistent and quick – from 5 working days, the set is safely couriered back to you in ‘like new’ condition. Our engineers have over 475 years of combined experience in surgical instrument maintenance.

Standardised sets make scheduling easier, simplify decontamination, and enable any surgeon to work with any set without variability issues.
Consistently functional and fully stocked sets reduce time spent trouble shooting instruments and minimise delays caused by missing or faulty items.
RENU equipment is stored together in trays which minimises time spent locating equipment.
The number is calculated based on procedure volumes and reprocessing requirements to ensure sufficient availability at all times.
Standardised and well maintained sets reduce complexity, turnaround issues, and rewash rates, improving overall workflow.
A fixed monthly fee to allow predictable budgeting and cost control.
The service removes the need for upfront capital investment while giving access to new instruments. Costs become operational and predictable, reducing unplanned repair expenditure.
Yes, the service allows the number of sets in circulation to vary according to demand.
Yes. By maintaining and repairing equipment, we can extend the life of these high value surgical instruments. Our service supports the circular economy by reducing waste and avoiding plastics associated with repeated procurement of single use items.
Yes. The model supports:
Reduced product lifecycle CO₂ impact
Circular economy principles are followed through increased reusable equipment
Lower waste generation
These are all priorities within the NHS Net Zero Supplier Roadmap, Design for Life Roadmap and waste hierarchy principles.
Yes. High quality reusable scissors, trocars, and other laparoscopic instruments reduce reliance on costly single use equivalents.
